Any runners out there using technology to help with training?

I currently just use a Nike Plus, but I am considering on upgrading to a Forerunner, maybe the 310XT since I like to cycle as well.

Let me know what technology you use, and what brand/models you would recommend.

Thanks!

Chad

So far I've been happy with my Polar RS100 + googlemaps and/or Shapelink's Track tool. It does nothing fancy, just HR + time and will give you average & max HR in the end, time in zone, lap times (and HR in each) and calories, but I've had it a year and I have nothing bad to say about it. Very affordable as well.

Hi, I have been running and cycling although I'm considering giving up running due to ankle and foot issues.  But I have been using the Forerunner 301 right now.  Its a nice little GPS device that also measures HR.  So you can view speed,  HR etc while running and it maps out the workout after you're done so you can also see the work on inclines.  I've been using HR as a indicator of effort for quite awhile and had a Polar 102 for quite awhile.  What's amazing is that I've been able to get the 301 for the same price I paid for the Polar and it does more, although I've had more trouble with this device. I'm on my second one in about 2 years.  The warranty went out about 2 months before the HR stopped working. (1 yr manu warranty)  I think the 301 price's are a bit lower as the device is kinda big for a wrist instrument but it doesn't really bother me that much.  You can download it on the computer and it gives you a mapped out report on your workout with avg and max HR and time in each HR zone.  You can set up to 3 HRs for different sports.  Its got a running, cycling and a misc setup. So you can set individuals zones for three sports(5 zones on each).  Really nice.  I used to change the Polar zones by hand.  I bought my first 301 for around $100 @Costco, then got the second rebuild model on line via E-Bay.  I looked recently and they ran for about $157 new on E-Bay.  I'm not sure if they are still making this model.

Regardless of what you get, its been helpful to use these devices for feedback on workouts.  The prices have really come down and I think HR is really helpful to measure whether you are working at the right workout level.

I too have some experience with using Forerunner 301 for considerable time. You can always maintain good rhythm and balance since you know your pace and increase of the heart rate while running. This is particularly good for runners approaching middle age. I am happy and quite comfortable with the product.

Oh, for sure! From a business/marketing standpoint the “barefoot technology” comment is golden. I’m just saying that as someone who really does it (i.e. barefoot running)…I can see right through that phrase.
